Rays 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft Selections

Rays 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft Selections:

1st Round (20th overall pick): Casey Gillaspie, 1B, Wichita State

ANALYSIS: A switch-hitting first baseman that possesses a lot of power. Connects with the barrel of the bat very well, allowing the ball to drive far. In his final season with the Shockers he batted .389/.520/.682 belting 15 home runs. Led the Cape Cod League in home runs last summer with 8, while compiling a .321 batting average. Has a sure handed glove at first base, making all the routine plays. Lacks speed on the base paths, but will be known for his hitting and defense.

2nd Round (60th overall pick): Cameron Varga, RHP, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (OH)

ANALYSIS: Has a good pitcher's build standing at 6'3" and is athletic having also played shortstop. Can deliver the fastball between 90-95 mph with life and an easy delivery. Also has a powerful change up along with the change up in his repertoire. Missed much of the summer showcase with biceps tendinitis, but has been healthy all spring. Will turn 20 in August, making him one of the oldest players coming out of high school.

2nd Round (72nd overall pick): Brent Honeywell, RHP, Walters State Community College (TN)
