Race Fans Flock to 2022 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Fla. (CW44 News At 10) - If you blink, you might miss it. Not only are Indycars one of the fastest cars out there, they attract audiences from all over the country.

Friday morning kicked off the 2022 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Folks there were off to the races bright and early.

A proud Hoosier,  Jeff Dinger and Indycars have something in common: both derive from Indianapolis. Home of the sport's most popular competition, the Indianapolis 500.

"I attended the Indy 500 - I mean nobody got to attend in 2020 – but outside of that, like 52 in a row so… I love watching race cars," said Dinger, excited and on his way to the grandstand for qualifications. He travelled over a thousand miles all the way from the Midwest to catch this year's Firestone Grand Prix. "This is, like, my fourth St. Petersburg race, [went to] the last three in a row. I'm not a fan of wrecks because people can get injured but them running nose to tail and side to side it's just glorious and wonderful… and I enjoy the competition!"
