Best Summer Reading Events For Kids In Tampa Bay

Reading is an important aspect of our daily lives. Children should learn to enjoy reading at a young age. By making reading fun, children will develop a love for reading that will follow them for life. There are events that to instill a love for reading this summer in Tampa Bay and a number of them are free.

Summer Reading Skills Program

The University of South Florida's 2013 Summer Reading Skills Program is designed to help students 4 years of age through second grade Programs cover basic reading skills, phonics, reading readiness skills, reading comprehension and word attack skills. Graduates of the program will be independent, fluent readers. Tuition for the summer reading program is $249.00 plus the cost of materials.

Super Camp is a summer enrichment program where students become inspired and empowered to excel. At Super Camp, professional educators will use interactive learning to inspire students to learn. Students will learn leadership skills, problem solving, and goal setting skills, as well as academic skills such as reading, writing, and math skills. Former graduates of Super Camp have shown an increase in SAT scores by as much as 100 points. Super Camp is designed to aid students 11 - 21 years of age.

Port Tampa City Library will be hosting a story time for children 3 to 5 years of age on Wednesdays throughout the summer. There will be stories, songs, interactive rhymes and more. Each program lasts for 30 minutes and highlights early learning skills. Through active participation, attendees will learn reading readiness skills and social skills. There is no charge to attend the story times at any Hillsborough County Public Library. The story time programs are available at other county libraries in the system at various times and days.

The summer reading programs at libraries throughout Pinellas County begins June 11 and continues until August 3, 2013. For elementary age children, the "Dream Big, READ!" program  offers rewards to children who continue to read throughout the entire summer. There are also activities for older children as well.

The Ford Center's reading program is designed to help children with learning disabilities and other difficulties such as ADHD, Dyslexia, and others. The average cost of this day camp for all five sessions is $400.00. Students get one-on-one multi-sensory educational therapy. The reading programs will improve sensory and cognitive functioning that will allow students to improve in academic subjects such as reading, writing, hand-writing and math.

Toddler Times at the Spring Hill Public Library is a program designed for children ages 18 - 35 months old. The weekly program consists of reading a story and singing songs each Thursday. Library personnel or volunteers will read the story and show pictures. Teaching children at a young age to love reading is the main goal of this program. Other libraries in the Hernando County Library System also have toddler time and story time programs available at various times and days of the week.
