BART service resumes after SUV ends up on tracks near Pittsburg; driver killed
BART service in Eastern Contra Costa County resumed Thursday morning, hours after deadly overnight crash on Highway 4 in which a driver went off the roadway and ended up on the train tracks.
According to authorities, the driver of an SUV heading in the eastbound direction crashed through the center divider near Bailey Road around 3:30 a.m., entering the BART trackway about 100 feet south of the station. The person in the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by first responders.
The transit agency initially said the SUV blocked both sets of tracks and has caused "significant" damage to the third rail and track infrastructure. In response, service was halted between the Antioch and North Concord / Martinez stations.
During the service stoppage, Tri Delta Transit and Contra Costa's County Connection deployed extra buses to serve East Contra Costa County BART riders, connecting them to North Concord BART, transit officials said.
Shortly before 7 a.m., the vehicle was removed from the tracks and repairs were being made.
Around 7:25 a.m., the agency announced that normal service was being restored through the area. At about the same time, Caltrans officials said all lanes of Eastbound Highway 4 were open.
Additional details about the collision were not immediately available. The crash is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
