PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Pittsburgh area is expected to see its coldest weather in years over the next several days.

Any Alert Days Ahead? Yes, First Alert Weather Days are in place through Thursday due to the cold and snow showers for today too.

Aware: We will spend more than a full six days with temperatures below 32°.

The coldest air mass in years will roll through our area today through Thursday. The coldest weather will be in place on Wednesday morning with lows potentially falling to a low of -8°. That is cold. In fact it is expected to become cold enough that frostbite could occur in as little as 30 minutes in some spots.

Frostbite occurs when your skin freezes. Your extremities are the biggest concerns so fingers, toes, ears, and even your nose are where frostbite occurs first. The best way to cancel out and stop frostbite is by being prepared for the cold.  Dress in layers and make sure you cover as much exposed skin as possible. Lotion or oil up your skin in order to slow down the cooling process for the outer layers of your skin. Plan ahead to make sure if you have to be outside that you can seek some relief from frigid air.

We've already seen our highs today (19°) and should get back to the mid-teens this afternoon.  Our daily low today won't be hit until just before midnight.

Tuesday morning lows will hover near 0°.  I have the low at -1°, but I think we will likely see a temperature two to three degrees colder than that by just before midnight on Wednesday.

Wednesday is where dangerously cold temperatures will be in place with morning lows potentially falling to as low as -8°. Wind chills could plunge to as low as -25°.  Looking at model trends it looks like models are pulling back just slightly when it comes to lows on Wednesday. It has already pulled back slightly on how cold temperatures will be on Wednesday with the latest data showing temperatures more likely falling to between 0° to -5°.  Not a big difference but it could make a huge difference when it comes to where our morning wind chills will fall.

The rest of the week will see temperatures remaining below average with more snow on the way for Sunday.
