PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The arctic air is on our doorstep and will take hold on Sunday night.

Climate: Average High: 36 | Average Low: 21

First Alert: Sunday night through Thursday morning (Coldest air of the season, hazardous wind chills in the morning)

Monday's lows will be in the single digits, with Tuesday and Wednesday seeing the coldest air dropping lows below zero. Wind chills all three mornings will be dangerous and below zero, with frostbite possible on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Wear gloves, hats, scarves, and layers. Also, cover up exposed pipes and leave cabinet doors open with a trickle of water running to avoid pipes freezing the next few nights.

Snow showers will taper off Sunday evening, and we'll stay mainly dry except for a few lake-effect snow showers at times. We could see flurries/snow showers Tuesday but otherwise, we will be dry and extremely cold until the Arctic air finally breaks Thursday midday.

The peak of the cold looks to be Wednesday morning, as high pressure settles into the region with lows on Wednesday morning well below zero. Wind chills will likely be in the -15 to -30F range across our area during the morning hours of this extreme cold wave.

The coldest wind chills will be in the Laurel Highlands and Ridges where an extreme cold warning is in effect.

A warming trend is expected by the end of the week as southwesterly flow returns to the region.
