In November 2011, former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was indicted on charges he sexually abused at least eight boys over a 15 year period. According to a graphic grand jury report, Sandusky allegedly found his victims through The Second Mile, a sports charity he founded for underprivileged youth. Michael Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, was sentenced on Nov. 29 to four years behind bars for his role in the death of the pop superstar. The Houston-based cardiologist was convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier in November after a six-week trial that presented the most detailed account yet of Jackson's final hours, and how Murray, 58, administered the powerful anesthetic propofol to treat the superstar's chronic insomnia. During the investigation into Jackson's June 2009 death, Murray told detectives he had been giving Jackson nightly doses of propofol to help him sleep as he prepared for a series of comeback concerts. Propofol is supposed to be used in hospital settings and has never been approved for sleep treatments, yet Murray acknowledged giving it to Jackson then leaving the room on the day the singer died. Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor chastised Murray for a "horrific violation of trust" in caring for the pop star and called the heavy use of propofol "medicine madness."2011: Year in Review
