The average American generates four pounds of garbage a day. As a nation, the U.S., produces four million tons of waste weekly. To illustrate the "trash problem" photographer Gregg Segal asked family, friends, and neighbors in California to save their trash and recyclables for one week and then lie down and be photographed in it. His aim was to illustrate how pervasive garbage is. The people in the photographs were confronted with how much waste they create daily despite despite recycling efforts and the need for even greater change in their lives.
Segal's photos were part of the The Fence 2014, a series of outdoor photography exhibits in Boston, New York, and Atlanta. The New York exhibit is currently on view at Brooklyn Bridge Park till Dec. 12, 2014.
