Person shot and killed by officer along I-95 south in Philadelphia, police say
A Philadelphia police officer shot and killed a 36-year-old man overnight along Interstate 95 south near the airport, according to police.
The department said the shooting happened shortly after 1 a.m. along the I-95 off-ramp to Philadelphia International Airport.
According to police, an officer was on patrol when the man told him he had been stabbed. The officer then called for backup and requested an ambulance, police said.
Police claim the officer and the man got into a fight while waiting for backup and medics to arrive. The department claims the officer unsuccessfully used his taser on the man. A second officer, later identified as Officer Brian Laureano, then arrived, and the first officer again tried to use his taser, police claim.
Police claim Laureano then fired his gun multiple times and killed the man.
According to police, neither officer was equipped with a body camera.
Police say Laureano worked for the department for 28 years and was assigned to the airport unit. Laureano was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office's investigation.
The department says the other officer at the police shooting did not fire his gun.
