Will The Right Finally Back McCain?

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

Will the real conservative please stand up? The Republicans have a problem. Their frontrunner, John McCain, has few fans among the Rush loving right wing. They even booed him yesterday at the CPAC gathering in Washington.

But was Mitt Romney really the answer? Romney has the movie star looks and the private sector CV. But his record in public office really didn't make him the second coming of Ronald Reagan.

Republicans are salivating over a Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama candidacy, but who will lead them back to the White House?

There are some suggestions that McCain should pick Mike Huckabee as a running mate. Huckabee, a Baptist preacher by training and vocation before politics, has the evangelical credentials. But he too is too soft of immigration and taxes.

Talking with CBS political guru Jeff Greenfield today, he said, "How about Newt?" Gingrich himself had toyed with running for president this year. Right about now he's probably sorry he didn't.
