Viagra Spurs Scandalous Behavior Among Seniors

When you hear the words "sex scandal" perhaps the last place you'd think of finding one is a retirement community. But reports of seniors having sex in public is the talk of the town in Sun City West, Arizona. National correspondent Hattie Kauffman investigated.

It's one thing for frisky teenagers to be caught "doing it" in the back of a car--quite another for their grandparents. And that was just one of several apparent sightings of active seniors maybe getting a little too active.

Behind the walls of this retirement village the elderly are staying young. Activities like water aerobics, tennis, golf--and sex?

When one male resident first heard about this sex scandal in Sun City West, he says, "I thought it was funny."

But resident bachelor Jack Richey says he has no doubt that these trysts happened. "Oh, I don't doubt that a bit."

Some say relatives are worried. "My daughter said she didn't know if she should bring her daughter or not because of the 'den of iniquity' out here," says one female resident.

No one knows exactly which residents of this community were carrying on in public places when day turned to night, but stories of sex in this city have traveled far and wide.

David Begeal says, "It's around the world, pretty near. I'm from upstate New York and they've heard it back there, you know?"

The legend began this spring when a senior security patrol supposedly caught an elderly couple being too intimate in a parked car. Then other reported sightings came in. Sex in the spa, a tryst in the doggie park . . .

Bunny Lester says, "Oh, the dogs didn't care that there was anything going on back there. They didn't think anything of it!"

Another woman says, "I mean, we're not dead. We're just older!"

According to Hollywood, it takes an alien life force in the movie Cocoon to transform sleepy seniors into tigers.

In the real world of Sun City West, it may be more pharmacological than extraterrestrial.

Some doubt that a scandal like this could have happened before Viagra came on the market, but some men deny needing it.

Resident Begeal says the fact that older people are having sex shouldn't be so surprising. "Well, I say more power to 'em."

As the ranking expert on such matters, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, says, "Older people can have good sex."

Westheimer says she does not approve of sex in public but believes there's nothing wrong with active seniors having active sex lives--and even getting carried away.

"Now to be old and foolish and engage in sex is wonderful," says Westheimer. "But make sure that you are in a secluded corner of the woods!"

And that means not on the bench in the doggie park, which brings us back to all those lurid tales. It turns out, like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster, they may be nothing more than tales.

"Well, here we are at the doggie park. I look around, it looks pretty innocent to me," says resident Jack Richey. "Very inocent, but of course, supposedly this all takes place after they've rolled up the sidewalks."

And the women aren't letting on if they know who's doing it. When asked if they know anyone who's done this, the reply is a chorus of "No's."

"Are you kidding? Look around you!" says one woman.

But Richey says, "It's not a sin. It's a miracle!" With or without a little help from the medicine cabinet.

And coming soon--rock and roll. For the first time in 20 years, Sun City West is hosting a rock concert, with Bob Dylan performing. At age 60, he could feel right at home.

Correspondent Hattie Kauffman also talked about her report on the Early Show.

She says these reports didn't come out of thin air. In Sun City West, seniors are deputized to help police their own community. And that's how this started--with a flashlight into a parked car. But there were no citations or reports.

The incident was raised as a sort of, "Be careful out there" item at a tow meeting. Then others said: "Yeah, we've heard of sex taking place in the pool and on park benches." A local newspaper picked up the story, and it made national headlines. Nobody admits to knowing these sensuous seniors. But everybody is certainly talking about it.

Folks in Sun City say it's alright to live a little dangerously, but not toengage in sex where someone can easily find you. As Dr. Ruth says, that's inappropriate at any age. Her advice if you get the feeling and can't do it at home: Rent a motel room.
