The train wreck that is Charlie Sheen may not be as out-of-control and destructive as everyone thinks. Between rants, Sheen is planning a new TV show with Mark Cuban, and is bragging about future roles in "multimillion dollar films."
Cuban, owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, told ESPN that he's been talking with Sheen recently about developing programming for HDNet, Cuban's cable network. Cuban said they've discussed Sheen hosting a talk show or starring in a reality show. "Right now, we're taping a lot of different things that Charlie is doing and we'll try to figure out" if Sheen should host a talk show or star in a reality show. "We'll do something together," he says.
The Mavericks have already tapped into the nation's fascination with Sheen for some team promotions. For instance, clips from Sheen interviews were used over the loudspeakers during the last game at American Airlines Center.
Cuban also said Sheen's show on UStream.tv on Saturday was a good start to a potential talk show career. "It gave him a chance to be himself and have some fun. Charlie just loves to mess with the media. You guys fall hook, line and sinker," Cuban said.
Doesn't this seem like Ozzy Osbourne all over again? The antics, and trademark mumbling of heavy metal artist Osbourne and his family were a hit MTV reality show "The Osbournes" from 2002 to 2005. Full of profanity and erratic behavior, the show won a 2002 Emmy for Outstanding Reality program. Four years later Ozzy told BBC Radio that he was "stoned during the entire filming of series."
To keep the buzz going, Sheen seems to unleash his mentally unbalanced side at will, much like Ozzy did. Sheen's latest headline-grabbing insults -- this time the barbs were aimed at his "Two and a Half Men" costar Jon Cryer -- gave more hints about his ambition. "When I'm starring in multimillion-dollar films and [Cryer's] begging me for a supporting role, I'll say, 'You left me out in the cold with all of your guilt.'"
Sheen has also been sane enough to make plenty of brand shoutouts on Twitter, to court potential clients for his off-beat projects. DirecTV (DTV), Naked Juice, Patek Phillipe and the Chicago Cubs have all shown up in Sheen's Twitpics so far.
