A man allegedly killed at least three people Thursday during a violent rampage, stabbing four people and hitting several others with a car in the Northern California cities of Milpitas and San Jose before he was taken into custody.

Kevin Parkourana, 31, has been charged with multiple counts of homicide, attempted homicide and carjacking, San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata announced Friday afternoon.

The suspect was on probation, Mata told reporters during a press conference. He said the suspect has had multiple felony and misdemeanor convictions over a period of several years.

The police chief described the rampage as "random acts of violence."

"There was no targeting of individuals," Mata said. He also said investigators were trying to determine a motive.

The rampage started Thursday afternoon in San Jose when a man was stabbed during a carjacking, San Jose Deputy Chief Steve Lagorio told reporters Friday. The man suffered life-threatening injuries but was stabilized.

The suspect then drove the man's minivan to a shopping center and carjacked an SUV, stabbing another person in the process, Lagorio said. That person also suffered life-threatening injuries and was also stabilized.

While fleeing the scene, the suspect struck a pedestrian in the shopping center's parking lot, San Jose police spokesman Steve Aponte said Thursday. That person's injuries weren't life-threatening.

At an intersection, the suspect struck a vehicle and stabbed a person inside the vehicle, who suffered injuries that weren't life-threatening, Lagorio said.

Later, the suspect apparently struck two pedestrians intentionally near an intersection, killing them, Aponte said. San Jose police said in a statement Friday that the pedestrians were a man and a woman. Nearby, the suspect also struck a person on a motorized scooter, Lagorio said.

In the neighboring city of Milpitas, a person was fatally stabbed in the parking lot of a warehouse grocery store, Aponte said. The suspect fled before police arrived, Milpitas police said in a statement

The suspect was found hiding in a nearby residential neighborhood and was taken into custody without incident, Milpitas police said.

"We feel comfortable that there is no ongoing threat to the public," Aponte said.

He added that police were investigating whether other crimes may have been committed during the rampage.
