Kansas City Royals outfielder Shane Mack was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to July 31, with a protruding disc of his cervical vertebrae.
The 34-year-old Mack is hitting .278 with six homers and 29 RBI in 69 games for the Royals this season. But the right-handed hitter has been much more effective against right-handed pitching, batting .308, to .228 against left-handers.
Mack entered the season with a .300 career average for San Diego, Minnesota and Boston. He played two seasons in Japan before batting .315 in 60 games for the Red Sox last season.
To take Mack's place on the roster, the Royals recalled left-hander Tim Byrdak from Triple-A Omaha of the Pacific Coast League.
