Romanian Pair Charged with Selling Baby in France

CBS/AP

(AP) Romanian authorities say two people have been arrested on charges of having sold their child six years ago to a couple living in France.

A court in this western city ruled late Tuesday that the couple should be held in jail for 29 days pending a trial.

They are accused of selling their newborn boy in 2004 for $6,470. Authorities said the boy was born in France and registered in the name of the adoptive parents, who are also Romanian.

Authorities said the biological parents were apprehended this week at a bank in Romania as they were about to withdraw the last installment for the sale of the child. If they are convicted, they face the possibility of up to 20 years in prison.
