"Once" stars explain musical's bittersweet ending

(CBS News) Spoiler alert - the stars of Broadway's "Once" appreciate the fact that the Tony Award winning musical doesn't have a Hollywood happy ending.

"Sometimes you meet these people in your life and it's not meant to work out, but they change you for the better," Tony-nominated actress Cristin Milioti said Thursday on "CBS This Morning." "Actually sometimes the strongest love can be someone that you never touch. I think it makes it much more powerful."

"Once" wins Best Musical

"Once" is based on the Academy Award winning independent film about an Irish musician and a Czech woman who share a passion for music and fall in love in Dublin.

The musical won eight Tony Awards this year, including Best Musical, and Best Actor for Steve Kazee.

"It leaves it up to you to have an emotion for yourself," Kazee said. "We don't force feed you and ending and we don't force feed you an emotion. I think people really respond to that. It's fresh."

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova starred in the original film and performed on the soundtrack. "Falling Slowly" won an Oscar for Best Original Song. Hansard and Irglova also recorded and performed as the Swell Season.
