Glen Rice scored 40 points as the Charlotte Hornets held off the Philadelphia 76ers for an 103-96 win Friday.
Vernon Maxwell added 19 points off the bench for the Hornets, who beat Philadelphia for the seventh straight time. Matt Geiger scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Allen Iverson scored 13 of his 30 points for the 76ers in the final 5:21 of the game. His three-point play with 1:16 left closed Philadelphia to 97-93. But Geiger's tip-in and Rice's 3-pointer in the final minute sealed the win.
Jim Jackson had 20 points for the 76ers while Theo Ratliff added 17 and Derrick Coleman 16.
Rice scored 21 points in the first half on 8-for-14 shooting as the teams fought to a 46-46 tie.
Charlotte scored the last seven points of the third quarter to open a 77-70 lead. Maxwell had 11 points in the final 6:08 of the period, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Notes: Given the uncertain status of injured guards Dell Curry and Bobby Phills, the Hornets on Friday signed Maxwell for the rest of the season. Playing under a 10-day contract starting Feb. 2, Maxwell had averaged 11.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in his first four games with the team... The 76ers haven't won in Charlotte since April 17, 1992... Charlotte guard Corey Beck missed his sixth straight game with a pulled left groin... Rice fell two points short of his season-high 42 against Miami on Jan. 2.
