Hispanic Reserve Officer Files Discrimination Lawsuit

A former reserve officer on the Edgewater police force has filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the city. The lawsuit brought by Eric Gomez claims he wasn't hired for a permanent job because he's Hispanic

Gomez says he ranked first among applicants under the city's testing program in May 1996

He agreed to forgo being hired so the city could hire someone with advanced computer skills. In exchange, the Edgewater police chief said in writing that Gomez would be the next officer hired

But another police chief was appointed later in 1996 and the new chief didn't honor the agreement. The city hired two non-Hispanic officers instead.
