Hillary Clinton earns endorsement from Brent Scowcroft
Add another Republican to the list of those supporting Hillary Clinton, the Democratic party's presumptive presidential nominee.
On Wednesday, Brent Scowcroft, a Republican who served as National Security Adviser to former Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, threw his endorsement to Clinton, who, he said, would bring "truly unique experience and perspective" to the Oval Office.
"Secretary Clinton shares my belief that America must remain the world's indispensable leader," Scowcroft, who runs the international business advisory firm The Scowcroft Group, said in a statement. "She understands that our leadership and engagement beyond our borders makes the world, and therefore the United States, more secure and prosperous."
Scowcroft, a former Air Force official and once a Military Assistant to President Richard Nixon, added that Clinton "appreciates" the importance of maintaining a "strong military advantage" while still retaining force "as a last resort."
The former Republican official pointed to Clinton's time as secretary of state as proof that she has the judgment to make "tough calls under pressure," praising her for brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and facilitating a global coalition to reign in Iran's nuclear program.
Scowcroft's full-throated endorsement of Clinton comes just as Donald Trump, the Republican party's presumptive nominee, attacked the former secretary of state's tenure as America's top diplomat.
"She lacks the temperament, the judgment and the competence to lead our country. She should not be president under any circumstances," Trump said in a New York speech Wednesday. He trashed her decisions in the Middle East as spreading "death, destruction and terrorism everywhere she touched" and said she "single-handedly" destabilized the region.
In her own speech in Raleigh, North Carolina Wednesday, Clinton fired back at Trump for his "outlandish lies."
"Donald hates it when anyone points out how hollow his sales pitch really is, and I guess my speech yesterday must have gotten under his skin because right away he lashed out on Twitter with outlandish lies and conspiracy theories and he did the same in his speech today," Clinton said.
