Good Buys On Kitchen Appliances

Buying a big kitchen appliance can involve a lot of money, and a lot of research. With so many different retailers, prices and offers, the decision is difficult. With a view to helping you sort it all out, The Saturday Early Show turned to Amanda Walker, a senior editor at Consumer Reports magazine, for guidance.

  • Buy from an independent retailer. Consumer Reports found that stores like Home Depot or Wal-Mart were no cheaper than "mom-and-pop" retailers. The magazine reports that employees at independent stores tended to be more helpful and more informed. Additionally, the smaller guys were more likely to provide delivery and takeaway services.
  • Look online for deals. Checking out manufacturer and store Web sites is a great way to research your purchase. But it turns out that there are also some fantastic online-only savings available: promotions, rebates, closeout specials and even free laundry detergent. Consumer Reports found they could save up to $600 by taking advantage of these offers.
  • Skip extended warranties. Basically, this is insurance you don't need. Sales people are really pushing these now because profit margins on appliances are shrinking, while retailers can still make lots of money on warranties. When you buy one, you're gambling that the appliance is going to break before the warranty is up, and that the repairs will cost more than the warranty. According to Consumer Reports, this just isn't the case, particularly in these appliances which don't involve new technology.
