DDéjà Vu In Maternity Room

Kerri Culkin and Michele LaPlaca of Long Island are crossing paths in the strangest place: a hospital maternity room.

"I didn't recognize Kerri at first," LaPlaca tells The Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm, about their meeting after she gave birth again at the same hospital. "It was probably about 10:00, 10:30 p.m. She was trying to sleep."

This was not the first time the two women had shared a room in the same hospital after giving birth. What is surprising is that they did not keep in touch after parting ways four years ago.

Culkin says, "We decided we were going to go our separate ways because everybody always says they'll keep in touch and they never do. So we decided we would part that way. Then we ended up meeting up again anyway."

The first time was in July 2001; La Placa says they shared a bonding experience.

She says, "It was our first child. We met. I got to the room late at night. Kerri was already there, which she was very comforting to me. I was a little overwhelmed. It was good to have her there."

And once again, LaPlaca says, Culkin was in the room, "We probably didn't start talking until about 3 in the morning when they brought our kids in for a feeding. And we just started talking. And like the first time, I was hungry. And Kerri had food for me. Then we just started talking. She kind of recognized my voice. And she heard me say that I had a 4-year-old daughter. So she asked me when she was born. And I didn't recognize her at first because her hair was different. But then when she said, she had a baby born on July 28. We stopped for a second, and it just clicked."

"We couldn't believe it," Culkin says. "We were completely stunned."

It's been said the odds of this thing happening is 18,000 to 1, so the hospital staff was amazed as well.

Culkin says, "I think that's how we got into all this business of being on camera because they thought it was just incredible."

The women say it is too much of a coincidence for them not to keep in touch from now on.
