Some 25 families have been evacuated, reports Correspondent Rick de Reyes of CBS affiliate KCBS. Winds are expected to pick up even more strength.
One of the fires started around 9:40 p.m. and there is no word on what touched it off. Parts of the area freeway remain closed.
Some 500 firefighters from across southern California are battling the blazes and several helicopters are dropping water at great risk because of the hilly terrain and the smoke.
Damage estimates indicate one fire had burned more than 1,000 acres in a community about 30 miles east of Santa Barbara, while a second blaze near Los Angeles had burned about 600 acres.
There was no estimate of when firefighters would have the blazes completely surrounded.
