Bomb Found Outside Austin Abortion Clinic

A suspicious package found in the parking lot of the Austin Women's Health Center Wednesday was an explosive device, the FBI said Thursday.

The discovery of the package forced the evacuation of the South Austin women's clinic Wednesday afternoon.

A worker found the package in the parking lot of the women's clinic, located on I-35 South between Woodland Ave. and Mariposa Drive, around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Emergency crews quickly moved in, and the bomb squad's robot inspected the package.

The Austin Women's Health Center, in addition to other services, is an abortion provider.

The bomb threat forced the closure of roads, and some residents of a nearby apartment complex were also evacuated. They were allowed to return to their homes around 10 p.m. Wednesday night. No injuries were reported.
