Big Music Store Chain Hits the Net

One of the biggest names in the music retail business, Trans World Entertainment, which recently acquired Camelot Music and operates stores under a variety of names including Coconuts, Planet Music and Record Town, has just launched twec.com, The Web's Entertainment Center. CEO Bob Higgins says the net lets shoppers listen to samples from tracks before they buy...

"It will really get the consumers much more familiar with the product than they are today. We have a total of probably 35 thousand new releases a year, 10 thousand of those are classical, so you have 25 thousand without the classical, and people just aren't familiar enough with product today. And I believe that we're a 12 billion dollar industry today that should probably be much larger. And I think the Internet can play a big role in increasing that business and driving the consumer to bricks and mortar stores as well as building a business of its own in the Internet."

TWEC plans to use its retail clout to offer exclusive online concerts, chats with artists, and other promotions.
