Bedazzled Necklines: Fall Fashion Trend
There's a fall fashion trend that can really let your wardrobe shine -- jeweled necklines.
Clarissa Cruz, editor of People StyleWatch magazine (www.people.com/people/stylewatch), showed some on The Early Show Thursday. She brought along four models who sampled the look.
Cruz says it's basically a top and jewelry all in one, and an easy way to add a lot of sparkle to your style, and look instantly chic.
It's also catching on with celebrities. But, says Cruz, anyone can pull it off, to varying degrees.
The secret to looking great in these pieces is to let the jeweled neckline take center stage and keep accessories simple, she observes. You don't need a necklace. Other jewelry should be subdued.
When shopping for a piece with a jeweled neckline, the type of jewels you should go for really depends on what time of day you're wearing them, Cruz adds. For the office, go for something that's not too sparkly. Embellishments that blend well with the top work best there. For night use, you can go for more glamour and shine. Don't be afraid to play it up.
Also, some jeweled necklines hit closer to the neck, while some hit closer to the bust. For a more casual look, or an evening look, they tend to hit a little lower, and are a little sexier. And for work, they tend to come up a little higher, for a little more coverage.

OUTFIT #1: CASUAL//TOP WITH JEWELED NECKLINE
Mint jeweled top, $374, at Crossing Main, 718-740-1321
Old Navy jeans, $29.50, oldnavy.com
Roberta Chiarella earrings, $98.00, RobertaChiarella.com
Shop Suey "Colleen" bag, $48, www.shopsueyboutique.com
Cole Haan flats, $375
ABOUT THE LOOK: This is a fancy little top, but the jeans make it look more appropriate for casual wear. The top has pockets, so it's pretty and functional. It has a lower neckline, since you don't have to be as covered up as you would need to be at the office. And, if it's a bigger top, pair it with fitted jeans to balance out the look. As for accessories, they should stay in the background and let the top shine. Ther are some trendy ones, like ballet flats (which are also comfortable), but they're pretty subdued. This outfit is great for shopping, doing errands, etc.
OUTFIT #2: OFFICE LOOK//SWEATER WITH JEWELED NECKLINE
Liz Claiborne jeweled sweater, $198, Macy's East
Ann Taylor gray trousers, $128, anntaylor.com
Limited bag, $54, The Limited, 1-800-756-4449
Cole Haan black shoes, $295
ABOUT THE LOOK: Pair this sweater with trousers or a slim pencil skirt. If you plan to wear a sweater like this to work, look for a neckline with less sparkly jewels. This is a great look, with just a bit of embellishment at neckline -- it doesn't shout at you. The jewels are the same color as the sweater, so it's a little more subdued, but still pretty. And, they're a little smaller in size, as well, so they're not too flashy. The neckline is also a little higher than in the casual look. Basically, everything in this look is more basic -- the shoes, bags, and pieces on the bottom. This really lets the sweater take the spotlight. Also, the sweater itself is pretty versatile: You could also dress it up or down, depending what you pair it with.
OUTFIT #3: DAY INTO NIGHT DRESS//RED PATTERNED DRESS WITH JEWELED NECKLINE
Kurta red jeweled dress, $348, Saks and Eluxury.com
Ann Taylor Loft bag, $89.99, anntaylor.com
H and M bracelet, $9.90 H&M stores (available in October)
Cole Haan shoes, $215
ABOUT THE LOOK: This is a great day-into-evening dress. You can wear it to work, then head right out for cocktails in it. It's very versatile and very pretty, and still appropriate for work. We added opaque tights for more coverage, since its shorter. And, we paired it with a structured bag. This keeps the look appropriate for the office, and once again, keeps everything else in the background, enabling the dress to shine. And, while you shouldn't wear a necklace with any of these pieces, you can still wear a pair of small earrings (like the ones with the casual look), bangles, or a ring with them. Just be sure they won't distract from the neckline.
OUTFIT #4: EVENING//SILVER DRESS
Steve Madden silver jeweled dress, $190, stevemadden.com
Pat Fields for Payless "Pewter Sake" clutch bag, $25, Payless ShoeSource stores + Payless.com (available in November)
Stuart Weitzman silver sandal, $215, stuartweitzman.zappos.com
Sequin bracelet, $148, Henri Bendel 1-800-HBENDEL
ABOUT THE LOOK: The accessories Cruz paired with the dress match the shine of the jewels, but don't overpower it. They're all in same color family -- silver/gray, which is hot right now. And, Cruz loves the clutch, feeling it looks really expensive, but it's only about $25. It's Patricia Fields (who did the wardrobe for "Sex and the City") for Payless. You could even add a little more jewelry to this look. Just remember, you want everything to work together, not to compete with neckline.
