10 biggest U.S. homes on the market

(MoneyWatch) Want to own a home that rivals the president's?

While few properties on the market can match the six-story, 55,000-square-foot White House, some come close. Indeed, the homes that follow are so big that they typically have staff quarters for all the help you would need to run a palatial mansion. They have features most homeowners could only dream about, from a nail salon to a 3-D movie theater to an underground firing range.

The smallest home on this list is more than 10 times the size of the average home. The largest house is the size of a football field, and only one is owned by a wealthy celebrity.

Beverly Hills oasis

Set on 20 acres overlooking Beverly Hills, this $47.5 million, 30,000 square-foot mansion has seven bedrooms, 22 bathrooms, staff quarters with three additional bedrooms and a separate kitchen, as well as an elevator and garage that accommodates 27 cars.

The home also has a gourmet kitchen, gym, game room, projection screening room and wine cellar. The grounds feature orchards, fountains, swimming pool, pool house with kitchen and pizza oven, tennis court, and walking paths.

Capital expense

At 36,740 square feet, this $26 million Washington, D.C., home is big for a reason -- it's zoned not only to serve as a personal residence but also as a possible embassy, foundation headquarters, association or club. President Calvin Coolidge lived in the home in 1927 and hosted Charles Lindbergh there after his solo transatlantic flight.

The home has 16 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, but none of the other fancy elements you'd find in modern mansions, like a pool or a media room. It is located in one of the most historic areas of Washington D.C. -- Dupont Circle -- and is just a mile from the White House, and two miles from the National Mall.

Winged estate

Perhaps the largest homes in Philadelphia, this $14 million modern estate has 36,957 square feet and is divided into three wings over 29 acres. The north wing is the family section; the east wing has two dining rooms; and the south wing is devoted to the living room, grand foyer and media room.

The home maximizes views of its large courtyard through floor-to-ceiling windows, and the hallways were designed to display vast art collections. The home also includes 10 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, a pool and an indoor basketball court.

House that oil built

Perhaps the largest home on the market in the U.S. is not in metropolitan New York or sitting atop a hill in Los Angeles -- it's located in a suburb of Phoenix called Paradise Valley, where plenty of homes exceed 15,000 square feet. But this $10 million home, built in the 1960s by oil tycoon Walker McCuneis, is certainly the biggest.

The home has 14 bedrooms and 23 bathrooms on six acres, with 360-degree views of Camelback Mountain and Phoenix. It has a ballroom, multiple kitchens, including one poolside. It also has a 2,900-square foot guest house (that's bigger than the average home right there), a 14-foot deep Olympic-sized pool, tennis court, spa with waterfall, his and hers locker rooms, playground and racquet ball court.

The home is being sold as-is, blue carpeting and all.

Bonus: Dream palace

The so-called Versailles home in Windmere, Fla., was the star -- along with its owner -- of the recent documentary "Queen of Versailles." The film's directors initially intended to follow the process of building the country's largest home, but wound up following the family's financial struggles as the recession took hold. For that reason, the home has been left unfinished for years, which is why it's not technically included in this list.

The 90,000 square-foot home is still on the market for $65 million -- down from $100 million -- even in its unfinished state. For $100 million, you can get the property finished to your specifications. For now it has a ball room, stained glass dome, fitness center and spa, indoor pool, arcade room with a bowling alley, 10 kitchens, and deck that stretches nearly half an acre.
