The Los Angeles Dodgers placed first baseman Freddie Freeman on the paternity list Sunday and recalled longtime minor league prospect Ryan Ward from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Ward, 28, will make his major league debut after seven years in organization's farm system. He will start at first base and bat seventh against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.

Los Angeles selected Ward in the eighth round of the 2019 draft, and he worked his way through the minors to Oklahoma City in 2024. He was the Pacific Coast League MVP in 2025 after slugging 36 home runs and driving in 122 runs for the Comets.

He batted .324 with four home runs in 18 games with Oklahoma City before his call-up Sunday. In 696 minor league games he is batting .266 with 154 home runs and 520 RBIs.

"He's a guy that, he's never been that big prospect," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I really believe in meritocracy and performing. Nothing was given to him, he's had to earn it and continue to earn it and continue to prove it. I do relate to that and so I'm sensitive to guys like him."

Freeman announced in February that he and his wife, Chelsea, were expecting their fourth child. He is hitting .296 with three home runs and 14 RBIs this season.

Luke Kennard scored a career playoff-high 27 points, LeBron James had 19 points and 13 assists, and the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers capitalized on Kevin Durant's injury absence for a 107-98 victory over the Houston Rockets in the opener of their first-round playoff series on Saturday night.

Deandre Ayton had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Lakers, who pulled off an impressive win without their top two scorers.

Both teams played the opener without their most important player. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have been out indefinitely with injuries since April 2, while Durant was a late scratch with a bruised right knee.

Los Angeles thrived by hitting 60.6% of its shots while holding the Rockets to 37.6% shooting with pesky defense.

Alperen Sengun scored 19 points and Jabari Smith Jr. had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the fifth-seeded Rockets, who finished one game behind Los Angeles in the regular season. Amen Thompson added 17 points, but Houston's young core got off to an inconsistent start after becoming the firm favorite in this series due to the Lakers' injury woes.

Game 2 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

The Lakers acquired Kennard from Atlanta in early February, and the NBA's most accurate 3-point shooter became a key reserve before he seized a major role over the past two weeks in the absence of Los Angeles' starting backcourt. He hit four 3-pointers in Game 1 while making nine of his first 12 shots.

Durant must wait at least one more game to make his Rockets playoff debut after banging knees with a teammate in practice Wednesday. Reed Sheppard took his spot in the starting lineup and hit five 3-pointers while scoring 17 points, but the Rockets struggled for consistent half-court offense in Durant's absence despite grabbing 21 offensive rebounds.

The Lakers took the lead for good on their first bucket of the second half, and they pushed their advantage to 16 points in the fourth quarter. Kennard scored 16 points after halftime, while The 41-year-old James began his 19th NBA postseason with an inspired, eight-assist first quarter followed by several gritty baskets down the stretch.

Los Angeles also got a boost from veteran guard Marcus Smart, who had 15 points and eight assists with four 3-pointers in his Lakers playoff debut. Smart said before the series that success would come down to "willpower" — and the Lakers clearly had more for starters.

Bronny James began the second quarter playing alongside his famous father in the first significant playoff minutes of the 21-year-old's career.

Los Angeles had won 11 of its previous 13 games and entered Saturday 6-1 in road games this season.

After allowing three runs in the first two innings, Colorado shut down the most productive offense in the majors with 3 1/3 shutout innings from its bullpen. Will Klein (1-1), who gave up Johnston's double in the sixth, took the loss.

TJ Rumfield and Kyle Karros each added an RBI in the win for Colorado.

On an afternoon in which the Shohei Ohtani was in the same two-mile radius in Denver as fellow global superstars Lionel Messi with Inter Miami and the Nuggets' Nikola Jokic, the Dodgers' two-way star singled in the ninth inning to extend his on-base streak to 50 games. That tied Hall of Famer Willie Keeler for the franchise's third-longest run since 1900. Ohtani had reached base twice earlier in the game, both times as a result of errors.

The Dodgers had a chance in the eighth inning to tie the game or take the lead, with the bases loaded and two outs. The Angels' ace increased his major league-leading strikeout total to 39, and he joined Milwaukee's Aaron Ashby as MLB's only pitchers with five wins.

Three Los Angeles relievers wrapped up a combined three-hitter in San Diego's first shutout loss of the season.

Before the first pitch, Angel Stadium aired a tribute video and observed a moment of silence for Garret Anderson, the longtime Angels outfielder and franchise hits leader whose death at 53 was announced by the team earlier Friday. San Diego had won 11 of 12 since its 2-5 start to the season.

Waldron started 26 games for the Padres in 2024, but just one last year — and then the occasional knuckleballer got a late start on the current season after undergoing a procedure on a hemorrhoid in February.

After Moncada's homer began a three-run rally in the second, Soriano escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third by getting Jackson Merrill to ground out.

Nolan Schanuel chased Waldron with an RBI single in the fourth before Adell and Lowe delivered two-RBI hits off David Morgan.

Soriano left after Manny Machado singled and Xander Bogaerts walked, but Chase Silseth got Gavin Sheets to fly out to the warning track in right.

Up next

Germán Márquez (2-1, 5.54 ERA) takes the Big A mound for the Padres on Saturday to face the Halos' struggling Yusei Kikuchi (0-2, 7.50).

Max Muncy homered twice, Tyler Glasnow allowed two hits in seven innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers rolled to a 7-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in frigid conditions on Friday night.

The Colorado grounds crew had to clear 3 inches of snow from the Coors Field playing surface before the game, which began with temperatures at 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 Celsius). But the chilly air didn't cool down the major league-best Dodgers (15-4), who have won 11 of 14.

Shohei Ohtani went 2 for 5 in his return to the Dodgers' lineup, extending his career-best on-base streak to 49 games. The two-way superstar pitched but did not bat in Wednesday's victory over the New York Mets because he was still sore from getting hit by a pitch on Monday.

Muncy leads the Dodgers with six homers. He went 3 for 4 with a double and drove in three runs in his 21st career multi-homer game. The veteran third baseman entered the game in a 1-for-17 slump.

Will Smith had two hits and two RBIs for Los Angeles, which scored at least one run in each of the first five innings.

Glasnow (2-0) allowed one run, struck out seven and walked two in his longest outing this season. He allowed doubles to Mickey Moniak in the fourth and Ezequiel Tovar in the seventh. Jack Dreyer worked the final two innings to complete the two-hitter.

The Rockies have lost seven of eight after a 6-6 start.

Tomoyuki Sugano (1-1) allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings. The 36-year-old right-hander had allowed only four runs across 16 2/3 innings in his first three starts.

Up next

RHP Emmet Sheehan (2-0, 6.60 ERA) takes the mound for the Dodgers against Rockies RHP Ryan Feltner (1-1, 7.30) as the series continues Saturday night, with warmer weather in the forecast.

Garret Anderson, the multitalented outfielder who became the Los Angeles Angels' career hits leader and led the team to its only World Series title, has died. He was 53.

The Angels posted about Anderson's death Friday morning on X, without immediately disclosing the cause or location.

Anderson reached the majors with the then-California Angels in 1994 and played for the club until 2008, primarily as a left fielder. He was a fixture in the heart of their batting order for his entire tenure, becoming the franchise's career leader in games played (2,013), hits (2,368), RBIs (1,292), total bases (3,743), extra-base hits (796), doubles (489) and grand slams (8).

"The Angels organization is mourning the loss of one of our franchise's most beloved icons, Garret Anderson," Angels owner Arte Moreno said in a statement. "Garret was a cornerstone of our organization throughout his 15 seasons, and his stoic presence in the outfield and our clubhouse elevated the Angels into an era of continued success, highlighted by the 2002 World Series championship. Garret will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class and loyalty throughout his career and beyond. His admiration and respect for the game was immeasurable."

Anderson retired from the league in 2011 after 17 seasons. Anderson was an All-Star in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

The Angels will wear a memorial patch this season bearing Anderson's initials, the team announced. They will hold a moment of silence on Friday before the Angels host the San Diego Padres.

Shohei Ohtani pitched one-run ball over six innings and struck out 10 in which he did not also bat since 2021, and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed the Mets 8-2 Wednesday night, sending New York to its seventh straight defeat.

Dalton Rushing, who replaced Ohtani as designated hitter, hit his first career grand slam off Mets closer Devin Williams in the eighth. Kyle Tucker added a two-out solo shot — his first at home as a Dodger — off Austin Warren, making it 8-1.

Ohtani (2-0) had tossed 33 consecutive innings without an earned run before MJ Melendez's RBI double in the fifth trimmed New York's deficit to 2-1. It was his first earned run allowed since Aug. 27 against Cincinnati.

Ohtani wasn't in the batting lineup during a mound start for the first time since May 28, 2021, with the Los Angeles Angels. Manager Dave Roberts said it was because Ohtani was still sore after getting hit in the back of his right shoulder by Mets pitcher David Peterson on Monday.

Ohtani's strikeouts were a season high by a Dodgers pitcher. He twice fanned Francisco Lindor in a battle of All-Stars. The second time, Lindor laughed as Ohtani blew a 99 mph fastball past him on his 11th and last pitch to end the third. Ohtani smiled wryly.

Ohtani walked two on 95 pitches, 63 for strikes. He struck out the side in the sixth to end his outing. Ohtani had 22 swing and misses, his most with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers (14-4) swept the Mets at home for the first time since June 19-22, 2017. Along with sweeps of Arizona and Washington, the Dodgers are 9-0 against National League opponents this season.

The Dodgers led 2-0 on Hyeseong Kim's two-run homer off Mets starter Clay Holmes (2-2) in the second. Teoscar Hernández added an opposite field solo shot leading off the sixth against reliever Tobias Myers.

The Mets managed five hits playing their 11th game without injured slugger Juan Soto (calf). They were outscored 14-4 in the series.

Melendez was the only Met with any success against Ohtani, going 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles after being called up from Triple-A Wednesday.

The Dodgers improved to 18-4 on Jackie Robinson Day — best mark in the majors — since MLB first declared a special day in 2004 for the player who broke baseball's color barrier in 1947 with Brooklyn.

Up next

Mets RHP Kodai Senga (0-2, 7.07 ERA) starts Friday against Chicago Cubs RHP Edward Cabrera (1-0, 1.62). Bennedict Mathurin led Los Angeles with 23 points and Darius Garland had 21 points and eight assists while battling foul trouble.

The Clippers led 98-85 with 9:53 to play, but the 38-year-old Curry led Golden State's furious comeback alongside Kristaps Porzingis, who scored 20 points, and the 39-year-old Horford.

Golden State got a classic second-half barrage from Curry, who returned only five games ago from a 27-game absence with a knee injury. He scored 16 points in a six-minute span of the third quarter to keep the Warriors in it while the Clippers nearly pulled away.

After Horford hit three 3-pointers down the stretch in the fourth quarter, Gui Santos' layup with 2:45 to play trimmed the Clips' lead to 115-114. Horford's fourth 3-pointer put the Warriors up 117-115 with 2:12 left.

The Clippers rallied from a chaotic 6-21 start to finish 42-40 in this once-woebegone franchise's 15th consecutive winning season — the NBA's longest active streak. But two late-season losses to Portland dropped Los Angeles to the No. 9 seed, requiring the Clips to get two play-in victories instead of one to make the playoffs.

After managing just eight points on 2-for-9 shooting in the first half, Curry scored 16 points and hit three 3-pointers in six electrifying minutes of the third quarter.

Referee Ben Taylor left shortly after halftime with an injury. He was replaced by alternate referee Sean Corbin.
