Through The Lens: The Christmas Tree Farm

Cutting down a Christmas tree has been a family tradition for many folks for hundreds of year. So I thought it would be fun to do a story on that timeless tradition.  So, I decided to go visit Mainstay Farm in Johnson County.  My biggest problem in trying to do this story this year was the weather.

First the hot, dry summer, causing a drought like Texas has not seen in over fifty years, caused there to be no trees for cutting down. They do have a large selection of fresh cut trees brought in from North Carolina ready to be carried home and decorated.  Ironically the second problem was rain.  Yes we needed every drop we got, but all that rain on a Saturday afternoon kept a lot of families away from the farm.

despite all the problems I decided to go anyway and make the best of it with those families who didn't let the wet weather keep them from the fun.  Yes, I said fun!

You see Mainstay Farm is more than a place to get your Christmas tree.  It's a place for families to have fun, and lots of it.  There is a lot to do at the farm because Jim and Marianna Wilson want to make sure your family has a good time when you visit.

There are hayrides that take you around the farm. A pedal cart track for the family to race around.  There is a huge 100-foot super chute slide made out of smooth drain culvert and a jumping pillow. Goats that will climb to the top of a twenty foot tower for some food as well a three story tree house the kids can climb around in.

And I thought you just went out in a field and chopped a tree down!  No it's way more than that.  It's a family tradition filled with fun and memories that will last a lifetime.
