RICHARDSON (CBS 11 NEWS) - The force is awakening all over North Texas. The latest Star Wars movie premiered Thursday night and North Texans lines up to be among the 'firsts'.

Thousands of moviegoers packed sold out theaters showing Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Most of them bought their tickets months ago.

You didn't have to a buy ticket to see lightsaber duels outside the Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson. In the parking lot, there were modified cars that look like spaceships.

Inside moviegoers wore elaborate costumes of characters that are familiar to almost everyone.

Fans said they couldn't wait for the first showing at 7 p.m. Thursday and others that ran into the overnight hours.

"It's one of the biggest phenomenons of pop culture that permeates our society," says Rick Wallace, Star Wars fan.

Alamo Drafthouse workers say the theater will have special events and exhibits related to Star Wars throughout the weekend.
