RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - For the health curious, fast-food eater in Richardson there's a new interactive, digital kiosk at one McDonald's location.

The McDonalds franchise, located on Centennial Boulevard, has the one-of-a-kind kiosk. The idea was the brainchild of franchise owner Jonathan Chan, who said he just thought it up.

"This is just a digital format, in my mind, to bring it [nutritional information] to the consumers visually and making it easily assessable on a 42-inch, touchscreen plasma."

The digital kiosk provides nutritional information for whatever you choose. The LCD display allows the customer to browse through menu items, and see things like the calorie, protein, and fat content in everything on the menu.

"It's a lot of different information where you can say, 'I want to know all the items that are less than 400 calories' and it lists that for you," explained Chan.

There's also carb and sodium information for food and McDonald's condiments.

While more and more Richardson customers are taking advantage of the kiosk, Chan said their decision-making seems undeterred.

"It does not change peoples ordering habits. It just serves as a great tool for them to have better options," Chan said of the digital nutrition information. "I wanted to offer something like that to my consumers, with beautiful pictures and where people can interact with something."

The kiosk also allows customers to "Build Your Meal" –- combining entrees, snacks, sides and beverages, to get the total nutritional value for your particular meal.

In case you were wondering some of the entrees with the most calories and fat include the Angus Bacon and Cheese burger [790 calories, 39(g) fat], the Premium Crispy Chicken Club sandwich [620 calories, 29(g) fat], and the Big Breakfast with Hotcakes [1090 calories, 56(g) fat].

Some of the healthier entrée items on the menu include - the Premium Grilled Chicken Classic Sandwich [350 calories, 9(g) fat], the Egg McMuffin [300 calories, 12(g) fat], and the Premium Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken [190 calories, 5(g) fat].

Chan said his intent for having the kiosk was clear. "We wanted to educate our consumers that McDonald's really does have great choices, really great choices. I mean, for example, you can get an Egg McMuffin for under 300 calories and most people didn't realize that."

Customers can alter the nutritional value of their items by removing things like cheese, bacon and special sauce. But the makeup of some items can't be changed, like the French fries [380 calories] or the Fruit and Yogurt Parfait [160 calories].
