KT's Notes From The Senior Bowl: Tuesday Practice

After a grueling 9 hour drive from Dallas to Mobile, Alabama, Jeff Cavanaugh from the G-Bag Nation and I arrived at our destination around 4:00am.

There's a ton of player that i'm looking forward to watching, but maybe none more exciting that WR Braxton Miller.

Miller is on the 'North' squad which is coached by the Dallas Cowboys.  Despite only recording 26 receptions in his lone season at Ohio State, he showed an advanced understanding of the WR position on tape.  He's also really fast, which allows him to get separation.  I would like for him to go in the 2nd round or so in the NFL Draft, and while I think pick 34 to the Cowboys is a little to rich for him, it's at least a name to monitor if he's still on the board when the Cowboys 3rd round pick nears.

In Tuesday's practice, both WR coach Derek Dooley and Head Coach Jason Garrett appeared to pay close attention to the former Ohio State QB, coaching him up on certain aspects of his game. One minute that stood out to me was when Dooley told him to control his body in the cone drills. Maybe it's a case of a WR being too explosive!

RB Kenneth Dixon from Louisiana Tech is a 3-down back who is a fearless runner and an exceptional receiver out of the backfield. He earned a 2nd round grade by my grading system, and is a guy who i'd again be hoping slides down through the 2nd and into the Cowboys laps in the 3rd round.  Not only was he hitting the hole hard at practice, but he was also making people miss, while also knowing he has the speed to get to the outside. He good.

Austin Johnson is a DT from Penn State and my heart is set on him as the starting 1-tech DT for the Cowboys next season. No offense to Nick Hayden, but Johnson's lateral ability to remove blockers and go get the football were showcased at practice on Tuesday.  He's more than a space eater, he's a playmaking 1-tech, which is something this defense has been missing.

Carson Wentz is as advertised. Throwing good balls in some shaky elements in the wind and rain in Mobile. I didn't lead with him, just to be mysterious. The Cowboys will get to know this kid even more this week, and his rise to Top 10 prominence is looking more and more possible by the minute.

Noah Spence might be the most talented guy in the draft. He's on the South roster coached by the Jaguars, but has an interesting backstory.  He was with Ohio State, before being kicked out of the Big 10 due to failed drug tests and an admitted problem with the drug ecstasy.  Spence was talented enough to enter the draft after not playing his junior year, but instead chose to play his senior year in the FCS, transferring to Eastern Kentucky.  He's an edge rushing prospect, who will likely be selected in the first round despite his red flags.  At weigh-in this morning, our own Bryan Broaddus from 105.3 The Fan and tweeted that he was near Cowboys DE coach Leon Lett when Spence weighed in, and that Lett thinks Spence can play in the Cowboys scheme at DE.  That's an interesting nugget, and something to keep track of as we get closer.  Seeing him in person, he really stood out, playing a physical style of football and showing the explosion you like to see for an edge rusher Just one year removed from having a first round talent fall to them in the 2nd round, could it happen again in 2016?

Yesterday there were reports that the Cowboys showed interest in Temple cornerback Tavon Young. Admittedly, I haven't seen his tape yet, but while his size does appear to be a little bit of an issue, he did show a great ability to play the ball, twice batting down slant routs during 1-on-1 drills.  He did get toasted by Braxton Miller one time, but I was impressed by his ability to play the ball and how he showed confidence and getting revenge on Miller later in the drill.

Other names that stood out from 'South' practice:

-Louisville DT Sheldon Rankins
-Baylor WR Jay Lee
-Baylor OL Spencer Drango

Other names that stood out from 'North' practice:

-Ohio State DL Adolphus Washington (3-tech)
-Ohio State S Tyvis Young
-UMass WR Tajae Sharpe

There's back to back practices on Wednesday, so keep following me @1053thefan on twitter for updates, as well as Jeff and I on twitter @jc1053 and @ktfuntweets.  We'll have content all through the day, as well as live call-ins during the shows!
