NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - If you are a "night owl" and a TXU customer a new service plan could save you hundreds of dollars a year on your bill.

TXU now has a set of plans that offers customers free nighttime energy usage. That would mean, for example, that doing laundry or running your dishwasher after 10 p.m. wouldn't cost you a dime.

"It's a really good idea to try and do things to reward people for taking demand off of the grid during peak consumption hours," TXU spokeswoman Amanda Ray explained. "Hopefully it will help people get ahead of summer and support the greater good, as well as our pocketbooks at home."

The TXU Energy Free Nights 24 plans aren't just for summer, offering potential savings year-round.

"It's a set of plans that offers you free nighttime energy charges, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., every night for the life of your contract with us," Ray said.

According to CBS 11 Meteorologist Jeff Jamison, summer 2012 will not be as hot as last year and more toward more typical North Texas summertime temperatures.

"You can probably expect 20 to 30 days at or above 100 degrees, rather than 71 days like we saw last year," Jamison said.

The plans are meant to benefit TXU with rising power generation cost and help customers with personal energy costs.

Ray said, "We estimate that by shifting even just 10-percent of your electricity use to nighttime, when these charges are free, you can save over $200 a year."

TXU Energy is offering the program in all five regions served by the utility. There are several plans available, with the shortest contract term being one year.
