Dallas Man To Bike In All 50 States For Organ Donor Awareness

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - A Dallas man is spending his summer raising awareness about the need for organ donors. David Landsberg is starting his 50-state tour on this Fourth of July.

Landsberg is a transplant recipient. He had a kidney transplant at Parkland Hospital in 1999, after losing both of his, because of a genetic disorder.

Now Landsberg has partnered with Donate Life America and is setting out on the "Donor's Rock Ride". The ride has him biking for 50 miles, in all 50 states, over the next 50 days.

"What I really want is to sign up as many donors as possible," he said. "And the other thing that I'm wanting to do is; change the face of organ donation, have it be something that people are willing to talk about."

Landsberg's first stop is in Austin. His will eventually ride some 2,500 miles, but he says it's worth it if he can help save lives.

"I want people care about it before they're on the list or their father, or mother, or somebody, needs an organ and can't get one."

After his transplant, Landsberg founded the Society for Organ Donor Awareness (S.O.D.A.), an organization dedicated to educating the public about the need for life saving organ and tissue donation.

Each of Landsberg's 50 rides will take place in the state capital. He'll complete his journey on August 23 in Oklahoma City.
