Dallas Ambush Suspect Identified, Charged With Aggravated Assault

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- Dallas Police are trying to determine what caused a man to open fire on authorities in an upscale, private community in north Dallas on Monday.

The North 40 community was flooded with law enforcement, including SWAT, for over two hours before the alleged gunman gave himself up.

Authorities have identified the gunman as 60-year-old Douglas Lee Leguin of Corinth. He has been charged with seven counts of aggravated assault.

The incident began as Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to a report of a fire. Officials say the man opened fire on firefighters and police as they arrived on scene.

According to police, the man approached a house and threatened a babysitter, who had to be rescued from the home, along with a young girl.

After the suspect was arrested, a HAZMAT team was called in to investigate a number of suspicious packages, which were later deemed safe.

Corinth Police say that a family member became concerned when Leguin didn't show up for work. The family member also noted that an AK-47, several rounds of ammunition, and multiple bottles of propane were missing from the residence.

The circumstances led family members to call police and tell them they didn't think Leguin was going to return home.

Assistant Chief of Corinth Police Greg Wilkerson said the department did not have any prior history with Leguin, but immediately grew concerned based on what family members told them.

"The family members said he had been watching Al-Jazzeera TV quite a bit lately.  He had made some statements to other friends about starting his own country. So that, in addition to the fact that we are now missing weapons, propane and several rounds of ammunition, we were very concerned."

Wilkerson said after a short investigation, police determined Leguin had traveled to Dallas and were able to notify DPD of his whereabouts.

CBS 11's Stephanie Lucero knocked on the door of Leguin's Corinth home.  His wife would not open the door and said, "Please leave, private property or I'll call police."
