Burleson Police Officer Stable After Being Shot 'Multiple' Times, Search Continues For 3 Suspects

BURLESON (CBSDFW.COM) — Officials with the Burleson Police Department say it was body armor that protected an officer when he was shot several times Wednesday morning.

According to authorities, it was around 4:15 a.m. on April 14 when an officer made a traffic stop in the 1100 block of Hillside Drive.

At a morning press conference, police said there were three people -- two men and a woman -- in the vehicle and that one of them opened fire as the lawman approached the passenger's side front door of the vehicle. The officer, whose name has not been released, was shot "multiple" times.

A department spokesperson said the officer -- who has been with the department for 3 or 4 years -- was conscious and talking when he was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He was said to be stable and alert late Wednesday morning. Officials have given no details on the extent of his injuries.

The suspects fled the scene in a maroon-colored SUV that was later found abandoned and burned in the 700 block of S.E. John Jones.

Investigators say there is video of the shooting from officer body cams and vehicle cams, but that it won't be released today.

Police are still canvassing the area, searching for the suspects. They say they have promising leads and are working with different agencies to apprehend the threesome.

Police are asking anyone who has information about the shooting or people in the area who see something suspicious to call 911.

The Texas Rangers are taking the lead in the investigation.
