Behind The Song ACM Awards Edition: Kenny Chesney 'Wild Child'

By Brian Ives,

“In the last several years, a lot of the songs about women have been written in kind of an objectifying way,” Kenny Chesney told in 2014. “If you didn’t wear cut-off jeans or a bikini top, or sit on a tailgate and drink, then you really weren’t worthy, you didn’t really add up."

"Wild Child," a duet with Grace Potter, was written in contrast to those songs. "'Wild Child' isn’t about that. ‘Wild Child’ is telling some girl out there that’s got dreams, that’s a free spirit, who’s smart and interesting, that she has a chance, that she is worthy.”

He added that the song was inspired by all the women in his life, whether it’s his family or someone that he chased or fell in love with.

“They’ve all had the idea of ‘Wild Child’ in them. I thought about all of those people when I was writing the song with Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally,” he said.

"Wild Child" is nominated for Vocal Event of the Year at the ACMs. To find out if it wins, tune in to CBS Sunday night April 3 at 8 pm ET/ 7 PM central.
