DES MOINES, Iowa (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Officials say an American Airlines plane carrying nearly 200 people made an emergency landing at the Des Moines airport because of smoke in the cockpit.

Kevin Foley, the executive director of the Des Moines International Airport, says the plane, traveling from Chicago to Phoenix, was diverted to Des Moines on Friday morning and landed safely.

Andrew Wall, an airport operations supervisor, says the American Airlines flight had taken off from Chicago, about 300 miles east of Des Moines. All the passengers got off the plane safely.

Officials are investigating what caused the smoke in the cockpit.

American Airlines headquarters are in Fort Worth.
