Where to find warming centers and temporary shelters in southeast Michigan as extreme cold moves through

(CBS DETROIT) — Communities across southeast Michigan are working to provide temporary relief from the extreme cold moving through this week. 

Here are a list of different shelters available in the area.

Clawson

A 24-hour warming center at the community center room inside Clawson's City Hall, 425 N. Main St., will be available through Wednesday.

A warming center at the Clawson Senior Center, 509 Fisher Ct., will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Detroit

Emergency overnight shelters will be available from Sunday at 2 p.m. to Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries facility on 13130 Woodward Ave. and the Pope Francis Center Bridge Housing Campus on West Hancock Street. 

City officials say anyone seeking shelter can utilize the Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM) by calling the housing resource helpline at 866-313-2520 from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Residents can also visit CAM sites in-person at Cass Community Social Services, 11850 Woodrow Wilson St., or Noah At Central, 23 E. Adams Ave. 

Veterans can visit the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center at 4646 John R. St. 

The program connects residents experiencing homelessness with access to shelter and housing resources. 

The helpline listed above also offers assistance to residents with moving costs, employment and property condition complaints.

The following recreation centers will be available as respite locations during normal operating hours:

  • Adams Butzel Complex, 10500 Lyndon St. (open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Butzel Family Center, 7737 Kercheval Ave. (open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Clemente Recreation Center, 2631 Bagley St. (open Monday through Friday from 1 to 9 p.m.)
  • Community Center at AB Ford, 100 Lenox St. (open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Crowell Recreation Center, 16630 Lahser Rd. (open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.)
  • Farwell Recreation Center, 2711 E. Outer Dr. (open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Heilmann Recreation Center, 19601 Crusade St. (open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Kemeny Recreation Center, 2260 S. Fort St. (open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Lasky Recreation Center, 13200 Fenelon St. (open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.)
  • Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers Rd. (open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Patton Recreation Center, 2301 Woodmere St. (open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)  

Detroit's public libraries will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, but will be open during normal hours before and after the holiday. Click here for the hours of each library.  

Farmington Hills

The Costick Activities Center at 28600 W. 11 Mile Rd., will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 23. 

Farmington Hill's fire station at 31455 W. Eleven Mile Rd. will be open daily from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday, Jan. 23. 

Anyone with questions about the warming centers can call the Farmington Hills Police Department command desk at 248-871-2610.

Dearborn Heights

Dearborn Heights city officials say residents can visit the following facilities during normal operating hours for temporary relief:

  • Berwyn Senior Center, 26155 Richardson St. (open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Caroline Kennedy Library, 24590 George St. (open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Eton Senior Center, 4900 Pardee Ave. (open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • John F. Kennedy Library, 24602 Van Born Rd. (open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Richard A. Young Recreation Center, 5400 McKinley St. (open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.)

Lenawee County

The Lenawee County government website has listed the following sites as warming shelter locations in response to the cold weather this week:

  • Adrian District Library, 143 E. Maumee St., Adrian.
  • Blissfield-Schultz-Holmes Memorial Library, 407 S. Lane St., Blissfield.
  • Clinton Township Public Library, 100 Brown St., Clinton.
  • Lenawee District Library-Addison, 102 S. Talbot St., Addison.
  • Lenawee District Library-Adrian, 4459 W. US 223, Adrian.
  • Lenawee District Library-Britton, 120 College Ave., Britton.
  • Lenawee District Library-Clayton, 3457 State St., Clayton.
  • Lenawee District Library-Deerfield, 170 Raisin St., Deerfield
  • Lenawee District Library-Onsted, 261 S. Monroe St., Onsted.
  • Share the Warmth, 427 W. Maumee St., Adrian.
  • Stair District Library-Morenci, 228 W. Main St., Morenci.
  • Tecumseh District Library, 215 N. Ottawa St., Tecumseh.

Livonia

According to Wayne County's website, Livonia has three warming centers available during normal operating hours:

  • Carle Sandburg Library, 30100 Seven Mile Rd. (open Monday and Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Kirksey Recreation Center, 15100 Hubbard St. (open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • Janet Bennett Civic Center Library, 32777 Five Mile Rd. (open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Macomb County

Macomb County Health and Community Services has posted a list of warming shelters for this winter season. Hours vary by location, and are posted at that link.

  • Center Line City Hall, 7070 Ten Mile Road, Center Line.

Marine City

Marine City Hall, commission chambers, 260 S. Parker St., Marine City, has been designated as a warming center during business hours.

Monroe County

The Monroe County Health Department has posted a list of warming shelters in Monroe County. Hours will vary, but are posted at that link. In addition, all county library sites will be closed Monday because of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The sites include:

  • Bedford Branch Library, 8575 Jackman Road, Temperance.
  • Bedford Senior Community Center, 1653 Samaria Road, Temperance.
  • Blue Bush Branch Library, 2210 Blue Bush Road, Monroe.
  • BridgePoint Church, 9875 Lewis Ave., Temperance.

Warren

Washtenaw County

Washtenaw County has a list of facilities that serve on a rotating basis as a winter daytime shelter location, according to the county government page.

The daytime location designated for most of January is St. Mary's Student Parish, 331 Thompson St., Ann Arbor.

An overnight shelter for those who are homeless is at the Delonis Center, 312 W. Huron St., Ann Arbor.

The additional sites listed as "temporary daytime winter havens" (hours vary) are as follows. Be aware that Washtenaw County buildings and offices are closed Monday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day and also will be closed Tuesday.
