U-M Health Sparrow union workers ratify three-year contract
LANSING, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - Union members representing nearly 2,000 nurses and other healthcare workers at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow have ratified a new three-year contract.
The contract ratification voting began Monday and ended Thursday for members of the Professional Employee Council of Sparrow Hospital-Michigan Nurses Association, the union reported. The union is an affiliate of National Nurses United and AFL-CIO.
The contract is effective immediately, and the agreement prevented a threatened five-day strike.
"We are pleased to have secured a new long-term contract covering our hardworking and dedicated team members," said Margaret Dimond, regional president, University of Michigan Health said in a statement issued Thursday.
"This contract reinforces our status as the employer of choice in Mid-Michigan, with competitive wage increases, excellent benefits and health and safety protections. We are grateful to all of our team members for continuing to put our patients and the community first and always delivering outstanding care."
U-M Health Sparrow is mid-Michigan's largest health system.
