Driver fled after passenger injured in crash on Interstate 96 at Davison
Michigan State Police are seeking the driver who fled after a single-vehicle crash that happened about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday at Interstate 96 and the Davison Freeway in Metro Detroit.
A call to the Detroit Regional Communication Center reported the one-car crash.
When troopers arrived, according to a social media post from Michigan State Police, Metro Detroit district, they saw the driver had abandoned the car. The driver's with the driver's door open and that seat empty. A passenger was found unconscious but breathing, with injuries that possibly included a broken arm.
Detroit Fire Department used a Jaws of Life cutting tool to get the passenger out of the wreckage. That person then was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
Troopers reported the preliminary investigation showed the driver was traveling "at a high rate of speed" and ran off the roadway to the right. The car struck a concrete barrier on the exit ramp, then crossed all lanes of travel to then strike the concrete barrier on the other side of the ramp
The vehicle stopped just short of the traffic light at Davison.
Because of the accident and cleanup, Michigan Department of Transportation issued a road closure notice for the exit from I-96 to Davison; then announced the area all clear about 2:20 a.m.
"Another crash caused by the driver going too fast and losing control," Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw said in his report. "This one was even worse as the irresponsible driver then fled the scene, leaving his injured passenger behind. If you know who the driver is, please call 855 MICH.TIP or 800.SPEAK.UP"
