Detroit teen killed amid traffic on Interstate 41 in Wisconsin
FRIENDSHIP, Wis. (CBS DETROIT) - A 14-year-old Detroit boy is dead after he got outside of a vehicle that stopped partially on a traffic lane on Interstate 41 in Wisconsin, local officials reported.
The incident happened about 9:32 p.m. local time Wednesday, near Winnebago Street in Friendship, which is in Fond du Lac County.
The initial call to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Communications Center was to report a crash, the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office reported.
After deputies responded to the location, they learned that an argument had erupted among the four occupants of a southbound vehicle, the press release said. There were two adults and two teens in that vehicle. As a result of the situation, the driver, identified as Glenn Wheaton, 49, of Detroit, stopped on the median side. That vehicle was still partially in the lane of traffic.
"Occupants got out of the vehicle to continue the argument on Interstate 41," the report said.
Among them: the 14-year-old boy, who exited from the rear passenger side of the vehicle and stepped into the lane of traffic.
Then another southbound driver, Evan Finnegan, age 20, from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, struck the stopped vehicle and the 14-year-old, deputies said.
The teenager died at the scene.
His name and the name of the other teenager in the vehicle, who was also from Detroit, were not provided by officers.
The adult passenger was identified as 31-year-old Desmond Wilson of Detroit.
Several area police and fire agencies, the county medical examiner's office, the county highway department and Wisconsin State Patrol assisted deputies on the call.
I-41 was closed for about 4 ½ hours because of the fatality and resulting investigation.
"The Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash, and the driver of the vehicle who struck the passenger is cooperating with the investigation," the report said.
