WARREN (CBS DETROIT) - Public hours at Dorothy Busch Library in Warren – specifically its mid-afternoon closures in recent weeks – are on the agenda for a library commission meeting.

The Warren Public Library Commission will hold its regular meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Warren Civic Center Library on City Square in Warren. The discussion items include "Busch Branch hours during students release from school."

This topic came up during the commission's November meeting in which library staff reported students from nearby Fitzgerald High School were gathering in the library parking lot after school dismissed. The school has been closing its doors when classes are done, and students are required to leave campus.

That being said, some students must wait for rides home via parents and others will return to campus for an after-school or evening event. Without students being able to wait at school, the library became a popular hangout spot.

Police said at the library meeting that because of unruly disruptions, police were called to the Busch library over 100 times in the past year.

The library commission then voted to close the branch from 2:15 to 4 p.m. on school days from Nov. 22 to Feb. 28, adjusting if there is an early dismissal at the school.

The matter was set to be reviewed in early 2025.
