"It's a rare experience, but it's not unique, and it seems with climate change and more intense hurricane seasons, it's happening more frequently," one archaeologist said.
Residents in at least four Florida counties were ordered to evacuate from barrier islands, low-lying areas and mobile homes.
Lee County, which encompasses Fort Myers, has recorded an "abnormal increase" in cases as a result of flooding from the storm.
