Man shot by police after standoff in Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chaos ensued in the Southwest Side's Mount Greenwood neighborhood Thursday night, as a man first called police saying he had done something bad to his family — and then ended up getting shot by police after a brief standoff.
The chain of events went down in the 11000 block of South Millard Avenue.
Late in the afternoon, the man called police and said he had guns and weapons in the house and had "something bad to his family."
Officers from the Morgan Park (22nd) District arrived at the house at 3:49 p.m., and saw the man leaning out the window, police said.
Sources told CBS News Chicago that when officers arrived, they were able safely to remove the other family members that were inside the home. The family members were uninjured and cooperated with police.
One of them, according to dispatch reports, said the man who called police was high on cocaine.
After repeated demands from Chicago police to the suspect to show his hands and surrender, sources said at some point, an officer opened fire — hitting and injuring the suspect.
The wounded suspect was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.
Meanwhile, an officer was also evaluated and was taken to a hospital for observatioin.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating late Thursday.
It was unclear if a weapon was recovered from the suspect.
