CHICAGO (CBS) — A rideshare passenger was hurt in a shooting overnight on the Dan Ryan Expressway, according to Illinois State Police.

The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. on northbound I-94 at 53rd Street.

Troopers responded to the scene for a report of an expressway shooting. Upon arrival, the rideshare driver told them they were shot at.

The backseat passenger was taken to a local area hospital with injuries. The age, gender, and condition of the victim were not released.

I-94 northbound near 53rd was closed for investigation just before 2 a.m. All lanes reopened after 5 a.m.

It was later confirmed that the rideshare driver worked for Lyft. The company said in a statement:

"The behavior described is reprehensible and has no place in our society. Our hearts are with the victims, and Lyft has been in direct contact with both the driver and the person who requested the ride to offer our support. We stand ready to assist law enforcement with any investigation."

It was the second shooting on the Dan Ryan Expressway this year. A person was shot on the Dan Ryan around 5 a.m. on New Year's Day and drove themselves to the hospital.

Saturday's shooting also came less than a month and less than a mile from another shooting involving a rideshare vehicle. Two Uber passengers were shot on the Dan Ryan near 59th Street on Dec. 13. The driver dropped them off at a nearby hospital and then drove to the Englewood District police station to report the shooting.
