2 in custody after fleeing police in Cicero, crashing on Near West Side of Chicago
Two people were taken into custody after fleeing from police in Cicero and crashing on Chicago's Near West Side on Monday.
Cicero police said around 3:30 p.m., officers initiated a routine traffic stop in the 4900 block of West 26th Street for the vehicle having tinted windows. After initially pulling over, the vehicle then fled the scene.
Police said the officers did not pursue the vehicle, but deployed a tracking device and sent the information to neighboring agencies.
Chicago police located the vehicle and attempted a stop. The vehicle eventually crashed on the Near West Side at Oakley Boulevard and Madison Street around 3:40 p.m.
CPD said a blue Hyundai Genesis sedan was headed west on Madison Street when it T-boned a black pickup truck headed north on Oakley Avenue. The sedan came to a stop against the wall of a nearby apartment building, while the truck went through a fence surrounding a nearby vacant lot.
"When you have cars traveling that fast, a pedestrian, a kid on a bike, they have no chance. So, thankfully, no one else was hurt, but, you know, my thoughts are with the person in the hospital right now," said resident Aaron Rodgers.
Despite airbags being deployed, the two jumped occupants got out of the sedan and ran, leaving the pickup truck driver hurt.
"It's terrible that a person was probably just driving home from work, and they get hit by someone breaking the law, running from the police. No one deserves that," Rodgers said.
The 57-year-old man driving the pickup truck was injured and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition with trauma to the body.
Cicero police said the two occupants were taken into custody, one of them being a known gang member. Information on the second person in custody was not released.
