Ohio man arrested in Indiana after trying to drive car off tow truck

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An Ohio man wanted for violating the terms of his probation was arrested in northwest Indiana on Friday, after police said he tried to drive his car off a tow truck to avoid arrest after a crash on Interstate 65.

Indiana State Police said a trooper responded to a single-vehicle crash on southbound I-65 on Friday near Rensselaer.

While investigating the crash, the trooper determined the driver was lying about his identity, and was wanted on a probation violation in Ohio.

When the officer tried to arrest the man – identified as 52-year-old Carlos Sept, of Dayton, Ohio – the man ran across I-65, nearly causing several crashes in the snowy weather, and then ran through a ditch into a nearby field.

The trooper drove across I-65 and was preparing to search for the man with his K9 partner, when Sept ran back across the interstate, and tried to drive his car off the tow truck.

Sept eventually gave himself up and was taken into custody. The trooper's K9 later found Sept was in possession of marijuana and suspected heroin. He faces felony charges of intimidation and possession of a controlled substance; and misdemeanor charges of false identity statement, resisting law enforcement, and possession of marijuana.

Police said the probation violation in Ohio was considered non-extraditable.
