Baby dies after being born prematurely following mother's shooting death in Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A baby has died after being born prematurely after his mother was shot and killed last week in the Portage Park neighborhood.
Jesus Castrejon was pronounced dead at 7:12 p.m. on Thursday at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy determined Jesus, who was 7 days old, died of complications of prematurity after his mother was shot in the chest. His death has been ruled a homicide.
His mother, 35-year-old Edith Castrejon, was shot in her chest on Jan. 16 while in bed with her boyfriend in the 5800 block of West Newport Avenue.
Police and prosecutors have said her boyfriend, 42-year-old Robert Pasco, was sleeping with a gun under his pillow at the time. When Castrejon reached over and grabbed the gun, Pasco woke up and shot her in the chest.
Castrejohn was taken to Illinois Masonic, where she was pronounced dead. She was five months pregnant at the time, and doctors were able to deliver her baby, but he had only a 25% chance of survival before he died on Thursday.
Pasco has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Prosecutors said he has prior convictions on gun charges.
According to a police report, the gun he shot Castrejon with was a 9mm "ghost gun" meaning it was homemade from a kit or a 3-D printer.
