Snow coming to Massachusetts this weekend could be biggest storm of season so far

BOSTON - Now that Thursday's snow is over, there's an excellent chance of plowable snow falling this weekend in Boston and most of Massachusetts.  It could be the biggest snow storm of the season so far.

Right now, there will be just some scattered, light sleet, freezing rain and rain showers Thursday afternoon.

Temperatures will slowly rise above freezing in most of the area Thursday night. However, it will take several more hours to get there north and west of Boston.

So, beware that any untreated surfaces in the Merrimack Valley, Worcester County and southern New Hampshire will likely still be slick.

How much snow?

The final snow totals will be quite minor from Thursday's storm. For areas south of the Massachusetts Turnpike, just a coating to an inch which will be topped and compressed by a round of sleet and rain.

North of the Pike, just an inch or two of snow and sleet. There may be a bit more up in southern New Hampshire.

We will see some melting on Friday with high temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. Unfortunately, it will be another very windy day. Westerly winds will gust frequently between 25-and-45 mph making it feel much colder outside.

The next snowstorms

There are at least two more storms in the pipeline over the next seven days in Massachusetts. The first comes Saturday night into Sunday morning and then the next arrives around the middle of next week.

Saturday night's storm looks much snowier than what we saw Thursday.

In fact, there is a decent shot that the weekend storm could be the snowiest of the season thus far!

We feel pretty bullish about most of southern New England getting plowable snowfall. The peak of the storm will arrive between 10 p.m. and midnight Saturday and last through about mid-morning Sunday.

We will have a snowfall forecast map and updated timeline later today.
