The term "dog-friendly restaurant" can be a bit tricky and deceiving. State and federal health codes restrict pets from "the premises of a food establishment."

However, many dog owners have discovered a loophole called 'the outer edge of the patio.'

It's there, a number of establishments in and around Boston will allow your pet to join you for a bite to eat. Here's a list of the best places to eat in Boston when you have your dog in tow.

Toro

1704 Washington Street
Boston, MA 02118
(617) 536-4300
website and reviews

Toro serves up some of the best tapas in the city. You may have to wait for one of the outdoor tables, but it's worth it. If you're thinking doggy bag, we recommend against Toro's specialty grilled corn. Alioli typically contains garlic (which some consider dog-unfriendly). And not to mention, once you try the corn, you're not going to want to share it anyway.

Cambridge Brewing Company

1 Kendall Sq, Bldg 100
Cambridge, MA 02139
(617) 494-1994
website

Cambridge Brewing Company does exactly what you'd expect – they brew great beer. Grab a drink and some of their delicious food. Go easy on the beer, or your pup may end up having to walk you home.

The Globe Bar & Cafe

555 Boylston Street
Boston, MA
(617) 778-6993
website and reviews

Situated on Boylston Street in the heart of Boston's Back Bay, the Globe's patio is perfect for people (and dog) watching. The staff there considers dog owners a vital part of their business, and thus treats dogs like they're customers.

Brasserie Jo

120 Huntington Ave.
Boston, MA 02116
Phone: (617) 425-3240
website

We haven't seen Jo on too many dog-friendly lists, but if you don't mind sitting the dog on the other side of the railing, it's a great spot to kick back. If they don't offer, don't hesitate to ask your server for a bowl of water for the pup. While well worth it, the food can be pricey. But if you go during the week, it's possible to save a little bit of cash.
